Environmental initiatives

As a company that offers enhanced life value through activities in nature,
we are engaged in a range of different environmental initiatives.

Our "lifetime warranty" on all products

All of Snow Peak's outdoor products carry a "lifetime warranty." This allows our users to have their product repaired whenever it breaks, rather than replacing it, and keep using it for many years to come. Even without a warranty card, we will repair any tool our customers wish to fix. In this way, we have established a business model that transcends mass production and mass consumption.

Initiatives related to recycling

JEPLAN, INC. works to realize a recycling society through businesses developing and manufacturing regenerated fibers. In July 2018, Snow Peak partnered with JEPLAN to invest in the vision to transform from a society that consumes underground resources to a society that recycles above-ground resources, and set about joint product development. In May 2019, we launched our first jointly-developed product, the Snow Peak BRING T-shirt, and began to collect garments for recycling at our directly-managed stores in Japan.
Moreover, in October 2019 we launched a new project called the Snow Peak Recycle Project. We have installed a WHOLEGARMENT® knitting machine manufactured by SHIMA SEIKI MFG., LTD. in the headquarters building. Under the new project, used apparel collected by Snow Peak is recycled into thread at JEPLAN's plant. This thread is then used for the internal manufacture of knitted products. The knitting process is on display in an open factory setup. By enabling visitors to experience recycling first hand, we aim to encourage more people to become familiar with these activities, and take part in recycling.
Through this initiative, we have built an integrated cycle: collecting garments for recycling, processing at recycling plants, manufacturing apparel using regenerated fiber, and selling these products. We have established a system to promote sustainable manufacturing "from garment to garment." We will proceed to examine future product development "from tent to garment," recycling tents and tarpaulins into clothing.

Attractive product development using recycled materials

Michihiko Iwamoto, Co-founder of JEPLAN, INC.

Environmental activities must be enjoyable, or they will not spread. If more people can enjoy a recycling society, then their participation in recycling will make it a personal matter for them, leading to a further rise in knowledge and awareness of recycling. The most important thing is for manufacturers to create great products from recycled materials. I expect Snow Peak to continue to generate attractive products into the future, to realize a sustainable society.

JEPLAN, INC. is engaged in realizing a recycling society through activities to connect companies wishing to recycle with consumers, and businesses including the development and manufacture of regenerated fiber, and recycling consulting.

Carbon Neutrality Initiatives | Switching to Renewable Energy

Snow Peak recognizes that contributing to the realization of a low-carbon society is one of its important social responsibilities. To achieve this, we will gradually shift to the use of renewable energy.

Use of Renewable Energy at Directly Managed Campfields and Major Bases

As part of our efforts to deliver outdoor experiences while pursuing sustainability with low environmental impact, we have now completed the conversion of energy sources for power used at 12 major bases and directly managed campfields to renewable energy through UPDATER (formerly: Minna Denryoku) and various other means.
Renewable energy is used to provide hot water for kitchens and showers at our directly managed campfields, as well as lighting for washrooms and to ensure safety on roads.

<Percentage Changeover Rate to Renewable Energy-Derived Electric Power>
Main bases*1 : 4 of 8 facilities, Changeover rate: 50%
Campgrounds and stores*2 : 8 of 11 facilities, Changeover rate: 73%

*1: Main bases: Includes locations with headquarters functions at each site such as Snow Peak head office (Snow Peak HEADQUARTERS, Snow Peak Operation Core HQ2, Snow Peak Tokyo HQ3), subsidiary (Snow Peak Business Solutions), and overseas bases (Snow Peak Korea, Inc.; Snow Peak Taiwan, Inc.; Snow Peak London, Limited; Snow Peak USA, Inc. (HQ4)).
*2: Campgrounds and stores: Includes directly managed campfields, attached directly managed stores (seven facilities in total), and stores based on the concept of "Land station" (four facilities in total, Japan domestic facilities only). We have completed the changeover to renewable energy-derived power for all campfield facilities.

Snow Peak's passion for the environment

Snow Peak, running a business based on nature, has been protecting nature for over 30 years by providing a permanent warranty for all of its products to promote their long-term use and reduce disposal.
Snow Peak HEADQUATERS, which opened in 2011, has solar power panels (1.5m x 1.0m x 240pcs.) installed. Our diverse initiatives to reduce environmental impact in recent years include: the Snow Peak Green Program, in which customers contribute to one-year protection of forests in Japan when they purchase applicable products (2017); the SNOW PEAK ReCYCLE PROJECT, involving product development using recycled fiber and the technology of JEPLAN, Inc. (formerly called Japan Environment PLANning) (2019); participation in the Green Down Project with the aim of establishing and promoting a system of collecting, refining, and reusing down feathers; collaboration with Takihyo Co., Ltd.'s UPCYCLE COTTON PROJECT recycling business aiming to produce clothes that are recycled rather than worn and thrown away as waste (2021); converting the source of electric power for major bases and campfields to renewable energy in collaboration with UPDATER (formerly Minna Denryoku) (2021); creating the world's first commercial environmentally friendly material TranTixxii®-Eco from pure titanium, in collaboration with Japan Steel (2022); and renewing the packaging of some products with more environmentally friendly designs.

Partnering to support external sustainability

We develop businesses that directly promote sustainability. Therefore, we are also engaged in supporting sustainability initiatives at other organizations.
For example, in the case of our partnership with Kwansei Gakuin University, with which we have concluded a comprehensive partnership agreement, we jointly developed an original bottle aimed to reduce the consumption of PET bottles on campus. By bringing this reusable bottle to the on-campus café, users can enjoy free beverages such as coffee and tea. Through this scheme, we aim to reduce the consumption of PET bottles by 100,000 per year, addressing the SDGs through industry-university collaboration.

Participation in environmental conservation activities

At Snow Peak, we are actively engaged in environmental conservation activities, with a constant awareness of the fact that humans are part of nature.

Minna-denryoku

We cannot enjoy outdoor recreation without nature. To protect nature, we strive for sustainable initiatives such as the operation of environmentally-friendly campfields with zero CO2 emissions, and contribute to creating a better future.

Conservation Alliance Japan

Conservation Alliance Japan contributes to environmental conservation by using funds gathered from participating outdoor-related companies to provide support for organizations engaged in activities to protect outdoor fields.

Green Down Project

Green Down Project aims to establish systems for the widespread recycling of down in Japan, in order to ensure the continued, stable supply of down products to more consumers into the future. At Snow Peak, we collect used down products at our storefronts, and offer a product lineup featuring recycled down.

FORESTOCK

FORESTSTOCK is engaged in projects to contribute to protecting Japan's forests. Each time one of Snow Peak's point card members purchases a current model tent, tarpaulin or shelter, we use part of the sale price to acquire CO2 absorption credits through FORESTOCK.

National Park Official Partnership Program

Snow Peak signed a partnership agreement in 2018, and cooperates to raise recognition of national parks, providing high value-added, environmentally-friendly accommodation such as glamping facilities inside national parks.
